Folks

Gwen and I returned from Texas and found a host of new yard birds. The highlight is a pair of Red-headed Woodpeckers. They are coming to the platform feeder next to the dining room window. What a treat to eat eating breakfast and see a lovely adult Red-headed Woodpecker fly in for a peanut. One of the adults was drumming high up on a dead tree in the back. A soft, slowest, and uniform drum. I wonder if this drum is diagnostic? It should be to the woodpecker.

Other birds around since we returned are Ruby-throated Hummingbirds (a male only so far), a Catbird (yesterday), one Blue-headed and one Red-eyed Vireo on Friday last, Green Heron fly over (today), and one Eastern Kingbird (also today). A couple Ruby-crowned Kinglets have also been around. I hope they start to sing soon.

Late April and early May is the most exciting time for most birders since the new arrivals add excitement and adventure to our lives.

Good birding.

George
