We had our first CATBIRDS today. I heard one singing
early this morning; and came home to one catbird singing,
and a second resting, puffed up, in a bush. Two
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS, a male and a female were
in the hanging feeder this morning, eating in surprising peace
with a Mourning Dove. And before that - a RED FOX at the
ground feeder! We usually get them in winter, early in the
morning. They'll come and eat peanuts. This fox had a nice
coat and looked well. It crept up towards the peanut feeder
through the shrubbery. But, we have all the shrubbery cut back
around the feeders, just because of such creeping things! So, it
came out in the open, planted both front legs on the feeder, and ate,
angling back its head and making big chomping motions with each
mouthful. The HOUSE WREN continues its work on our back
porch which is littered with small sticks. I heard a small ping loud
enough to bring me to the window, and he had picked up a stick
about twice his own length from the metal seed can on which
he had likely dropped it. This won't fit into the wren box hole; so
I expect it is for his alternate house on the other porch pillar. This
morning also brought a singing BLACK-THROATED GREEN
WARBLER. This evening, I was just approaching to change
our as yet untasted (as far as I knew) Hummingbird food, when
a RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD sat down at our feeder
just a few yards from where I froze and drank deeply. It periodically
moved its wings rapidly, even with no evident intention of flying away.
Our first hummer of the season.
