Best birds for me on the May Count this past Saturday were three
Black-necked Stilts at Deal Island. One bird appeared to have juvenile
plumage. This doesn't seem right, though, because the bird looked full
grown (although I didn't see it fly.) Incubation is about 25 days, and
fledging is at least that long. Assuming the bird isn't quite ready to fly,
that would still put the egg laying near the end of March - which seems
highly unlikely!

The birds are in the "usual" spot along Riley Roberts Road. They are seen
from atop the gravel-shell pile that's in the small parking area on the
right just as you start into the Deal Island WMA impoundment area.

The two very obvious adults were feeding more-or-less together along the
near side of watery marsh. The third bird was almost three-quarters of the
way across the watered area.

If anyone gets more good views of the youngish looking bird and can add
anything to this report --- please post.

Charlie
