I went out Saturday at Jug Bay (PG Co) and had a great day until a nasty
storm hit at 6:30. I was out from 5:30am - 6:30pm with 12 hours total
birding, incl. about 3.5 by boat on the river (7:15-11:00am) with Greg
Kearns (party of 6), and 8.5 (alone) in Patuxent River Park by car and on
foot (Selby's to Mt Calvert). Several breaks for notes and eating took
about 1 hour. Complete tally sent to Fred Fallon (County Coord.).
There were numerous (10+) species conspicuously missing, especially white-
throated and swamp sparrows (both left here Thurs or Fri night); also
kingfisher; two woodpeckers; and several breeding raptors/owls; however
with nice "surprises" I still observed 101 species (1,462 individuals).
Species with relatively high numbers included:
Great Blue Heron 28
Canada Goose 69
Wood Duck 28
Osprey 34
Laughing Gull 108
Foster's Tern 22
Acadian Flycatcher 24
White-eyed Vireo 22
Yellow-throated Vireo 11
Red-eyed Vireo 34
Blue Jay 97 (87 were fly-bys)
American Crow 27
Tree Swallow 67
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 24
Wood Thrush 48 (They were everywhere)
Northern Parula 21
Blackpoll Warbler 23
American Redstart 22
Ovenbird 33 (Also everywhere)
Common Yellowthroat 36
Hooded Warbler 13
Scarlet Tanager 29
