I did get my Life Bird Dickcissel today after many years of, of, um, I don't know what. What the heck has taken so long??? I don't know. It's just one of those Jinx birds out of the way for me. It was a piece of cake. They were in the Fredrick County area as previously posted. Other birds to take note of, many Grasshopper Sparrows, including a tail-less one, Vesper Sparrow, Horned Lark, Meadow Lark. The road in we did have Chestnut-sided Warbler singing, Black-throat Blue Warbler, Yellow-throated Vireo, Warbling Vireo, and Both Orioles.
One of the strangest things we saw was on Baptist Road. A full Adult Red Headed Woodpecker was sitting in the middle of the field. Perching on top of the old corn stalks. They were cut down so that the tallest one was about a foot high and he was just going from stalk to ground to stalk. I didn't see him picking or pecking at anything. We watched this for about 5 minutes and moved on to leave him strangely hanging out in the corn field.??
Also, my friend Tom Raub and I went down to Fort McHenry and found the Western Kingbird right away. Perched and singing his little hart out. He must think he is the only Western Kingbird in the world.
