I went around the Milford Mill loop this morning May 27 for the first
time in a while. There were still a few migrants around. Best was a
silent Wilson's Warbler along the streamside trail most of the way to
the turnaround point. There is usually one in the park each spring but
this was my first sighting this year. There were also Magnolia,
Blackpoll, and B-t Green Warblers (one each) as well as potentially
resident Redstarts and Parulas. Several Veeries were singing lustily,
but I didn't see or hear any migrant thrushes except one Swainson's. I
also heard a male and saw a female Scarlet Tanager. Acadian
Flycatchers were numerous as well as a few Pewees. (Milford Mill Park
is in western Balto Co where Milford Mill Rd goes under the Beltway
north of Liberty Rd.)
Backtracking to Thursday May 26, I looked for the Bicknell's and
Gray-cheeked Thrushes at Middle Patuxent Environmental Area and made a
second pass with Stan Arnold when he came along, but we didn't see or
hear either species. Kentucky Warblers were active and somewhat
visible along the main trail (north end of loop). There were about 5
Canada Warblers along the way, and a N Waterthrush at the river, and a
singing Blue-winged Warbler near the fork at the top.
