The Eared Grebe that Kathy Lambert mentioned in her Jefferson Patterson Park report, was first seen by Dan Kluza and Rhonda Kranz who were covering the park for May Count on 5/14/05. Dan reported the bird to me and I have been remiss about posting it on Osprey. Dan mentioned that they had observed both grebes side-by-side and were easily able to compare the differences. Last week was a very busy week for me culminating in a stellar MOS Convention in Solomons today. Quite a few convention attendees were able to see both birds today along with several Buffleheads and a Common Goldeneye. Both grebes are extremely handsome in their breeding plumage. We did miss the Red-throated Loon though.

After leading a trip to Jeff Pat Pk, I'm wondering if the birds know that it's May. At the waterfront, we found 6 Bufflehead, along with both the Horned and Eared Grebes in breeding plumage. Much to our surprise, we also found a Red-throated Loon in very nearly complete breeding plumage.............
