Folks

I went atlasing again today. Today I visited Colonial Beach North - NW. This block is around the Morgantown, Charles County area and has some pretty good stands of forest, some wetlands, a few farm fields, and the Potomac River. I tallied 63 species in the three hours I worked the block. Some were only observed (BAEA, ROTE, HEGU), and others were not yet in safe dates (CEWA), but it was a fine day anyway.

Highlights were:

A pair of Black Vultures on an old barn roof. I need to check to see if there is a nest inside.
Lots of Ospreys on nest, some with young.
A flyover Killdeer
Young Mourning Dove
Eastern Wood Peewee many spots
Great-crested Flycatcher at a few locations
Young Purple Martins at two locations
House Wren on territory. Not that common down here.
Young European Starlings
Warblers on territory were Northern Parula, Yellow-throated, Pine, Prairie, Prothonotary, Ovenbird, Louisiana Waterthrush, Kentucky (several locations on Morgantown Rd.), and Common Yellowthroat.
Both tanagers were present in several areas.
Blue Grosbeak were at two locations singing
Common Grackle young with yellow gape
Several Orchard Orioles at various locations
Young House Sparrow at several locations including some Purple Martin house.

Good atlasing.
