Last week, while atlasing in my block, I spotted a very out of character
cedar waxwing out in front of the Rock Creek Nature Center--I've never seen
one look disheveled before, so I started watching. In a minute, the bird
flew up into the oak above me, and seemed to be going to a nest! Well,
since it was up high, and directly above me, the only solution was to lie
on the walk to watch (waxwing neck is just as bad as warbler neck). It
took a bit before I could get a good enough look to be sure that it was the
waxwings up there, and then I just watched them awhile. (Tip: a pocket pack
of Kleenex works fine as a headrest on concrete.) The pair seemed to arrive
together, and both to work on the nest together at first, then one would
leave and wait for the other to finish arranging the latest twigs.
Evidently, they then went together to find more, because they always flew
back to the nest at the same time. I thought people might like to know
about it, since hopefully there will be young waxwings around there before
long.
