Michel,
Common Merganser is a new breeding species in Maryland, discovered in the past few years. That is why the Yellow Book does not show it summering regularly. Young have been observed on the Potomac above Washington and on the Monocacy in Frederick County.

When I was there on Father's Day with my family I looked at them only briefly and thought they were common or red-breasted mergansers based on body shape (longer looking than hoodeds) but upon my return I noticed in the yellow book that only hoodeds are to be expected here at this time of year. I saw three of these in the section of Huntley Meadows that still has water in it. They were all sitting on logs with some mallards.
