11 July
Spent 4 hours this morning mainly checking the impoundments and
wetlands to the west as far as Sycamore Landing Rd in an unsuccessful
attempt to find Red-headed Woodpeckers where they nested last year.
Also drove along River Rd and Hunting Quarter Rd.
Not a bad day with 50 species. Highlights were a Least Bittern in the
buttonbush marsh which looked like it was flying into its nest, an adult
Bald Eagle, a hen Wild Turkey( she disappeared before I could look for
poults), 3 recently fledged E. Kingbirds, Red-eyed Vireo feeding young, 30
Rough-winged Swallows along River Rd., and a singing Grasshopper Sparrow NW
of Sycamore Landing Rd at River.
Didn't seem like as much singing as last week, but did hear the
following species-Mourning Dove, E. Wood-Pewee, Acadian Flycatcher,
White-eyed Vireo, Yellow-throated Vireo, Red-eyed Vireo, House Wren, Wood
Thrush, robin, Gray Catbird, Common Yellowthroat, Yellow-breasted Chat ,
Scarlet Tanager, E. Towhee, Field Sparrow, Grasshopper Sparrow, and Song
Sparrow.
