While walking along a fire trail W of where Snowdens Run enters
the W branch of Liberty Lake, two Barred Owls flew past me, and
let out a squeal. Then they flew across the trail behind me,
flying side by side. As they flew, one gave a quiet "Who cooks
for you all." Apparently, Barred Owls can do quiet song, and
while they fly.
"Quiet", "muted", or "whisper" song is often an alarm response
(Terres, 1980, Enc. N. Am. Birds). They startled me, and I
startled them.
