An interesting morning on the Paint Branch Stream Valley
Park trail between Cherry Hill Rd and the University of
Maryland. I birded from 9 am to 9:45 am under mostly sunny
skies, not too humid. Amazingly, I got *two* new year birds
for the trail: PURPLE MARTIN and RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD.
I've been waiting for these for some time.

Also *lots* of juveniles around, including CANADA GOOSE,
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, PURPLE MARTIN, AMERICAN ROBIN, GRAY
CATBIRD, NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD, EUROPEAN STARLING, and
BALTIMORE ORIOLE. One of the INDIGO BUNTINGS was in basic
(nonbreeding) plumage.

Here's the complete list submitted to http://www.ebird.org/:

Canada Goose 45
Red-shouldered Hawk 1
Killdeer 2
Mourning Dove 2

Indigo Bunting 4
Red-winged Blackbird 4
Common Grackle 2
Brown-headed Cowbird 2

Also: crow sp (1), woodpecker sp (1, tapping). May have
seen Eastern Bluebird (just a glimpse; may have been
juvenile robin).

Good birding,

D
