Summer in the yard here in Friendship Heights has been fun but not exactly full of rarities--watching the catbirds and robins grow up, trying to figure out if and where the cardinals are nesting, counting house sparrows, etc. Today I had a bit of excitement, though, as a Ruby-throated Hummingbird visited the yard.
Granted it doesn't compare to the 10 at once reported elsewhere, but I don't have a feeder and until now didn't know whether any hummers were even in the neighborhood. Nice to see my red trumpet honeysuckle is earning its keep!
