Hello All,
With the recent rain, I wandered back roads on the way home yesterday to see if there were any fields in the appropriate condition for shorebirds. I found one harvested cucumber field at the intersection of DE 36 and Blanchard Rd, west of Greenwood. It held 45 Killdeer, 6 Semi Plover, 8 Least Sand, 3 Pectoral Sand. The extensive string bean fields on Dublin Hill / Trinity Church / Whitney Swamp have not yet been harvested.
At Oak Grove, the partially harvested cucumber field on the corner of North Oak Grove and Kinder Rd (in the edge of MD), held 34 Killdeer, 3 Least Sand, 1 Pectoral and 1 Spotted. All birds except a few Killdeer were viewed Kinder Rd in the deepest part of the field.

An addendum to my previous comments about these fields and Buff-breasted Sandpipers. A new wrinkle has developed this summer in that some fields were planted cucumbers, string beans, etc. for an early crop that was harvested in July. It was then re-planted with late soybeans. But these will not be harvested until November, so that removes some of the potential spots for BBSA.

Good Birding,
