Around 9pm I stepped out of the Cafe while talking to my wife on the phone about last nights outing to Tyson's Corner to see Common Nighthawks. While on the phone I walked down Ellsworth Drive to George Avenue and looked across the street, scanning the top of the Discovery building to no avail. As I walked back down Ellsworth to the Cafe I looked up over the parking lot that has the Wayne Avenue entrance and that's when I saw my first bird. I ran to the car and grabbed my bins and then sprinted up to the top of the parking deck. I turned to face the top of the new Courtyard by Marriott, a building that has been recently erected and flying over the roof lights were 15+ Common Nighthawks.

Having no one to share this with I ran back to the Cafe and grabbed my kitchen staff and in what broken Spanish I can speak I called my line cooks and dishwasher outside for their first lesson in birdwatching. I'm not sure the experience made as much of an impact on them as it did on me, but it was quite a pleasant surprise (and distraction) for a fairly slow night at work.
