Where the birds aren't

I spent nearly an hour at Great Falls on this perfect afternoon, and
virtually the only winged creatures in evidence were butterflies. Other than
a handful of turkey vultures and chimney swifts overhead, the only birds
seen or heard were one red-bellied woodpecker, one goldfinch, and two blue
jays.

Now perhaps the trees were full of migrants quietly resting up for night
flights, but where were the locals? There were NO geese, NO grackles, NO
robins, not even a titmouse. Silent September... eerie.
