Skimmers have indeed gotten to be rare birds on Skimmer Island and other locations we've found them breeding here in Worcester County but somewhere there must be small colonies hanging on. Yesterday afternoon as we pulled into our development here in West Ocean City, we noted about a dozen sub-adult skimmers playing tag over the waters of our neighborhood pond.

Earlier in the spring we had about 5 adults loafing here for a few days but they disappeared for the remainder of spring and summer. In past years we have had first the adults and then the juvies hanging out on the ponds almost all summer and well into the fall.
