Jim Stasz and I birded a little of Harford this evening for shorebirds. I
stopped by the Aldino Sod Farm on my way to Havre de Grace. This place has
been a complete bust this year. My last few visits have all had under 10
Killdeer.
Swan Harbor had very few shorebirds, but plenty of Lesser Yellowlegs and a
Semi Plover. Also 2 Wilson's Snipe flying around. There was a large mixed
flock of Green-winged and Blue-winged Teal, probably 15-20 of each. Two
Western Palm Warblers were flitting in the cattails and Bobolinks were flushed
several times.
Next we went to Tydings were there were more shorebirds than I've ever seen
there at one time. Unfortunately, the light was fading and we didn't get an
accurate count because we focusing on species diversity. There was a minimum
of 50 peeps including 2 White-rumps that Jim found. I found a Sanderling
hanging out with about 10 Semi Plovers. These were my 3rd and 4th White-rumps
for the county and my second Sanderling. Also present were 21 Pectoral
Sandpipers and 6 Lesser Yellowlegs. A large number of Forster's Terns were
present, but we couldn't find a Common or Black. A lone Northern Shoveler was
hanging out and flew away as we were leaving.
