I went to Lake Whetstone today, just to see what I could find between
5:20 to 6:30pm. I saw a few things that I've never seen there before.
There was a boy fishing under the pavilion and there was a Great-blue
Heron sitting on top of the pavilion. When the boy actually caught a fish,
he put it on the boardwalk, still floping, and the heron flew down and
gobbled it up. That was neat to see a heron up so close.
There was a baby GB Heron hanging around in it's nest and half-grown baby
mallards. So cute!
Also, I saw some Common Nighthawks flying over head. I had never seen
nighthawks in that area before.
One more thing - there was a little sandpiper in the shallow area of the
lake. There were two killdeer nearby it, so I can say it was smaller than
them, but I'm not exactly sure what it is. It was a solid gray on it's
back, had yellow legs, and black bill and a white "eyebrow". I was thinking
a stilt sandpiper, lesser yellowlegs, or least sandpiper. If anyone else
sees it, could you tell me what you think it is? Thanks.
