The D.C. Audubon Society made its annual fall trip to Rock Creek Park
this morning, led by Paul DeAnna. We covered Picnic Areas 17/18, the
Maintenance Yard, and the trails behind the Nature Center. The greatest
amount of activity was in the picnic areas between about 8 and 9 am,
when several warbler flocks made their way through the trees. In total
we saw about 50 species, including 14 warblers. Below are the highlights.
Warblers: Northern Parula, Nashville Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler,
Magnolia Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Black-throated Green
Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler, Bay-breasted Warbler, Blackpoll Warbler,
Black-and-white Warbler, American Redstart, Ovenbird, Common
Yellowthroat, Canada Warbler
Other birds of note: Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Eastern Wood-Pewee,
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Brown Thrasher, Yellow-throated Vireo,
Red-eyed Vireo, Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak
In addition, we saw all five resident woodpeckers, as well as several
rather large flocks of grackles that passed overhead.
Good birding,
