Migration has been kind of slow in our little area of West Bethesda
over the last week or so. I visited the Little Falls Parkway area
this morning, September 19, between 7:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.
Migration was at least partially evident, with MAGNOLIA (4), AMERICAN
REDSTART (4), NASHVILLE (1), COMMON YELLOWTHROAT (1) and
BLACK-THROATED BLUE (1) in the Warbler department.
Best bird was a PHILADELPHIA VIREO at about 8:00 a.m. Several
RED-EYED VIREOS and a SCARLET TANAGER were also present. A
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was present at dawn in our back yard along
Ewing Drive, Bethesda.
Little Falls Parkway has a lot of berry-bearing trees, including
cherries, and various vines like Porcelain berry, that should attract
birds for months to come. It bears watching over the fall and
winter. Already there are lots of American Robins and Cedar Waxwings.
I looked hard for, but could not find, a Connecticut Warbler; one was
seen at this location last week by John Hubbell. This species is
being seen all over the mid-Atlantic area, according to the various list-servs.
The Little Falls Parkway area is close to downtown Bethesda and is
accessible to those who work in Bethesda/Chevy Chase, either before
or after work or for a midday diversion. See the Montgomery Bird
Club's "Birders' Guide to Montgomery County, Maryland," pages 95-97.
