Cromwell Valley Park HawkWatch Saturday, Sept. 24th 2005
Between 9 and 10am a small group of birders witnessed what they had hoped for, and more! Just
under 1,400 Broad-winged hawks were seen rising from their roosts, forming kettles and
streaming south. A similar flight was seen at Cylburn Arboretum, thanks to Steve Sanfords' well
informed prediction. ( See Steve's posting on today's MDOSPREY also. ) I myself was at the DIANNE
GEPPI AIKENS fund raising event at Loyola College and ( without binoculars ) saw 3 large kettles
totalling about 200 hawks!!
By 10:30am or so my wife Joanne and I arrived at the CVP watch site. We may have missed the big
flight of BWs, but we were thrilled to see a fairly steady flight of accipiters, falcons, Bald eagles
and Osprey, not to mention dozens of BWs. With several observers skilled at hawk identifying ( Joe
P., Kevin G., Cal O. , Mark M., and Taylor M., among others ), the falcon ID tips were particularly
helpful. At least 17 visitors came out today, and we at CVP thank you all.
