ABout 8:15 this morning I went outside and was excited to see some
movement high up in teh sycamore and locust trees. These individual trees
are often visited by migrants - maybe they are very buggy. I id several
warbler species, but also had some frustrating misses. Parula (1),
redstart (5-6!), blackburnian (1), and 2 that were very similar; at least
one of them could have been a bay-breasted, which are rare here (as far as
I know), but I don't know. They were more likely to be blackpolls which
are seen commonly here, at least in Spring. I was unable to get good
views, and even if I had, I am not comfortable with them since I have only
seen one in fall before. I also saw several warblers that all I could
tell was it a warbler, by the profile. The light up high was flat and
awful.
Best bird was a big surprise. PHILADELPHIA VIREO, a first for me here! I
had a great look at it too; it was not as high up, and gave me a great
look for about 2 minutes before moving on.
Other noteworthy observations. Several dozen monarchs, they must be
having a big flight today. And a starling that was making a perfect Sora
call (ker-wee) repeatedly! The Soras are really in good numbers in the
marsh (Jug Bay) this fall. It's great to hear and see them again. The
wild rice restoration effort here has been an amazing success.
Cheers-
