Blue Mash Nature Trail, Zion Road Section, Montgomery County, 1 Oct 05,
0715-1015

A great morning to be out and about birding. I crossed paths with recently
returned to MD and former MBC member David Gersten, who was birding the BMNT
for the first time. A lot of diversity along the trail today although
migrant numbers were low. Forty-five species were observed.

Best bird was a "RED SHAFTED" NO. FLICKER perched on a snag. Swirls of
Chimney Swift and Tree Swallow, numbering several hundred birds, hawked
insects over the small pond. Some flew by so closely that you could here
the rush of air as they passed. Great looks at a perched Sharped-shinned
Hawk. Osprey and No. Harrier rounded out the birds of prey. Numerous jays
and robins flew overhead throughout the walk. E. Bluebirds also made a good
showing this morning.

Migrants included Willow Flycathcer, E. Phoebe, Palm Warbler (western),
Common Yellowthroat, Indigo Bunting and Scarlet Tanager. Yellow-rumped
Warbler and Ruby-crowned Kinglet were new birds for the season.
