What a difference a few days (last weekend) can make. I went away Friday
morning (Chicago), came back Sunday evening, and the bird composition had
changed dramatically. I was at Rock Creek briefly yesterday (Monday) in
AM before work and out in late afternoon at home near Jug Bay.
Many of the migrant bug eaters (warblers, vireos, flycatchers, etc.) at
Rock Creek have left (except kinglets!) and the seed eaters have arrived.
I saw only 5 warblers at Rock Creek (BTNW- 1 m, BTBW- 2 f, and 2
unknowns), 'tho there were very many kinglets (I saw only RCKI, but saw
over 20). I also saw many sparrows (WCSP, SCJU, SOSP), and cardinals,
blue jays, and wrens - including WIWR in three places.
Highlights at home were 2 common moorhens (new for year), a lack of any
warblers, and a yard full of pine cones! The pines here seemed to have
had a bumper year for seeds.
Soon it will be time for a Big Sparrow day!
