This afternoon watched a merlin plucking and eating while perched on a tree
limb at 8th and North Carolina NE, DC.  I'd seen him flare into the branch
gripping something.  When dropped, the prey turned out to be a beautifully
colored yellow-bellied sapsucker.  The breast had been eaten out and the
head was missing.
