Yesterday (Saturday 10/22) I spotted four PINE SISKINS at a friend’s
thistle feeders (in northern Damascus) along with at least five
goldfinches; two PINE SISKINS were present again today along with three
goldfinches (Sunday 10/23).
This evening (Sunday 10/23) a late OSPREY chose to roost in a dead treetop
in the woods at the back of my friend’s yard; we watched him on and off for
at least an hour before dark. (A large pond lies on the other side of the
patch of woods, so we assume that he probably caught a good meal earlier in
the day.) A minimum of fifty Canada geese were present on the pond earlier
in the afternoon.
As for my own yard, our first three juncos for the season finally returned
yesterday (Saturday 10/22), and a scruffy-looking Chipping sparrow visited
the feeders today (Sunday 10/23).
Also present this weekend:
16 American goldfinches
1 White-breasted nuthatch
1 Downy woodpecker (female)
2 Carolina wrens
2 Tufted titmice
1 Carolina chickadee
1 House finch (male)
3 Blue jays
7 Mourning doves
1 Northern mockingbird
12 House sparrows
