Yesterday I was birding the railroad tracks in Carroll County just east
or Morgan Rd where I found a Turkey Vulture with a trap clamped onto one
of its toes. The trap was one of those things that people use for
rabbits or other small game. The chain was still attached to the trap
but was broken loose from whatever had held it in place. The bird could
fly but with a great deal of difficulty and could only stand on one leg
when perching. Since the bird was mobile and high in the trees there
seemed nothing I could do to help it out. I don't know if the trap
eventually cuts off the toe, would the bird then be able to survive or
would infection set in, especially considering what Vultures eat. In
its current condition it will probably starve to death. Sad, since it
is something that mankind has inflicted on this bird.
