Ten students from Kennard Elementary in Centreville, 3 parents, and one pseudo-guide (me) had a bird walk at Horsehead this morning. We found nothing special. Of note was the lack of any numbers of yellow rumped warblers. I counted about 6 of them. Ducks were scarce. The canoe landing had a hundred or so ruddy ducks, with 4 grebes mixed in. The light angle was bad so getting a fix on the grebes wasn't possible. We had one osprey.

We did have some nice looks at about 6 cedar waxwings, all juveniles.

The kids had a great morning birding in this beautiful weather. Enjoy it while it lasts!

ps: I had one monarch fly thru the yard this afternoon.

The youth birders were Walter, Danielle, Elizabeth, Emmett, Brandan, Brooke, Walter #2, Walter's brother, and 2 friends of Walter who just came along to enjoy the birds.
