For finding how to access sites, a useful computer tool is the new
Google Earth. It is better for some areas than others, but where the
satellite photographs are clear, you can get extraordinarily detailed
images of a site in advance of visiting. I think it is best used in
conjunction with street maps like the ADC series or DeLorme's topo
atlases to get a sense of the lay of the land and possible landmarks.
(The downside, of course, is that it can't really be taken into the
field without a laptop, and possibly a wireless connection.)

My backpack usually includes the little Sibley and any specialized field
guides I might need - e.g., the Dunn and Garrett warbler book during
spring and fall migration, sometimes a waterfowl or seabirds book in
winter, or a butterfly or wildflower book in the summer. I think that
some kind of audio guide - either CD or mp3 - would be very useful as
well in the right seasons, but I don't pack one currently.

>Rick, I had a complaint the other day from one of the MDOsprey group about the fact that not enough information is given for many of the sites referenced in messages--where they are, how best to access them, etc. Part of my response was that the confused individual should get a copy of the DeLorme MD/DE Atlas and use the place-name index. Perhaps it wouldn't be amiss to write a column on the "well-equipped field birder's bag of goodies"?

Others might carry other favorites, like FRS radios, a compass, a small tape recorder, a PDA with birdlisting software, etc. Others might bring along even more (have you ever seen the trunk of Bob Ringler's car or what Jim Stasz carries on the roof of his?).
