Count me as another person who missed the posting about the bird's new
location. Today at 1:00 p.m. I went first to Violette's Lock to look for it.
No cormorants of any variety, but there were a couple of male Buffleheads
and a Common Loon swimming in the river. (Also some "loons" in a really,
really loud boat.) I then drove to Pennyfield Lock and walked down to the
river, where I saw Belted Kingfisher and Brown Creeper but no water birds.

Some folks in the parking lot passed along distressing news for us locals:
the Swains Lock boat rental/snack shop is being closed down by the Park
Service! They're selling off their canoes and kayaks, and will shut their
doors within a week. Apparently NPS based the decision on a study done by
Price Waterhouse. Does anyone know anything more about this? It will be a
sad loss of a wonderful recreational resource -- I saw my life Green Heron
from one of the Swain's Lock rental canoes about 40 years ago.
