Joy,
 You didn't say where you are located, but assuming maybe the  Washington 
metro area, or maybe even further out, perhaps try one of the Wild  Bird Centers 
for some hands on binocs. Many of their stores have a good  selection and you 
are under no obligation to buy. Also,  The Audubon  Naturalist Society hdqtrs 
in Chevy Chase, Woodend, has a fair selection on  hand.
 Also there are a couple of other bird related stores around with  
binoculars, one in Ellicott City, and one in Alexandria (VA, shhh). Do try a  number of 
pairs in hand though before you buy, even if you get something from  a mail 
order store.
