After getting a much later start than expected, I had a very productive evening in Garrett County on my way home for Thanksgiving break from WVU. Highlights are as follows:
McHenry area of Deep Creek Lake (1545-1625):
Pied-billed Grebe 8
American Coot 180
Mallard 4
Canada Goose 132
Ring-necked Duck 7
Redhead 5
Lesser Scaup 2
Driving South into Oakland and beyond, I observed the largest flight of American Crows I have ever witnessed. Thousands of crows were departing from the area of the Trout Run WWTP. A "flock" was first seen flying west over northern Oakland. I estimated this flock at 800-1000 individuals. Just South of Oakland, I discovered another very large abundance of crows. They were again flying in a westward direction. I estimate the number of this flock at 3000-4000 birds. It was simply amazing. There was a blackbird flock of several hundred birds on the East side of 219 south of Oakland. I did not have time to stop and ID them, as the light was fading.
Trout Run WWTP (1645-1730):
Canada Goose 39
RICHARDSON'S GOOSE 1
Mallard 4
SNOW BUNTING 1 (running along northern part of road leading to the gate)
Photos were taken of the RiGo and the SnBu. I will post these tomorrow once I get my other computer set up.
