I visited North Beach today to see the previously reported Rufous
Hummingbird. I arrived in the yard at 11:25, and first saw the bird at
12:02. It fed for about one minute at the feeder near the house, and then
flew off. I then waited until 12:27, when the hummer reappeared and fed
for another minute or two. Again, it went to the feeder next to the
house. After feeding, it flew off to the south.
I did get a few photos, although probably nothing to compare to what others
have taken. I'm fighting a cold, so it probably wasn't the best day for me
to go out, but I wanted to see this bird before the next round of snow and
cold air arrives. At least from my views, the bird did seem to have a
fairly significant amount of rufous on the tail, rump and lower back.
However, the only times I saw it was when it was feeding, after which it
promptly flew off. Thank you to Jim for the posts and setting out the
chairs.
