Hello All,
On Saturday 12/17, I covered the Hobbs area on the Denton CBC. The highlight was the waterfowl at the Denton WWTP. There were the normal Canada Geese, Mallard, Ring-Necks (33) and Ruddy Duck (13). In addition, there were 2 Common Goldeneye in the back pond, 2 Greater Scaup and 2 Bufflehead in the middle pond. If my quick look at my records is correct, the last 3 were county birds with the Bufflehead being Caroline bird #200. Later I found 4 Wood Duck and a Hooded Merganser in Watts Creek on Double Hills Rd. Other birds of interest were a Catbird at the WWTP, a White-crowned Sparrow in the industrial park, White-breasted and Red-breasted Nuthatch on County Farm Rd.
Since the Denton WWTP will not allow access, you have to find other ways to view the ponds. The back pond in visible behind the Roses shopping center at MD 404 and Legion Rd. Climb the embankment and look through the fence. The middle pond is visible from the industrial park. From Roses, go to the next light east on 404, turn left on to the service road, then right into the industrial park. Pull in the parking lot past the second building on the left (this side of the building appears vacant). In back there is a mound of dirt and, from here, the middle pond is reasonably visible through the trees.
On Sunday 12/18, I covered the Whitehaven territory on the Salisbury CBC with Charlie Vaughn. We had a excellent day with 77 species and impressive numbers of several species. Waterfowl on the Wicomico River seen from the end of Clara Rd included Ruddy Duck (105), Canvasback (65), Bufflehead (24), Greater Scaup (4), Lesser Scaup (6), Common Goldeneye (4), Long-Tailed Duck (2). Also 1 Common Loon and 1 Horned Grebe. There is a small dead end road off the end of Clara Rd. At the end, there was a mixed flock of 250 birds including 75 House Finch, 40 Junco; White-throat, Song, 7 Fox, 1 Savannah sparrows; 16 Cedar Waxwings, 7 brownie Purple Finch, 2 Sapsuckers, 2 Brown-Headed Nuthatch and Red-wing BB. Impressive and that many Purple Finch was a treat. Good numbers included 6 Virginia Rail (Ellis Bay WMA), 23 Wild Turkey (on Whitehaven Rd), 3 Red-Shouldered Hawk, 10 Brown-headed Nuthatch (several stops), 2 House Wren (Capitola Rd at Whitehaven Rd and Capitola Rd west of Clara Rd), 7 Winter Wren, 7 Catbird, 1 Brown Thrasher (in Whitehaven), 30 Hermit Thrush, 8 Purple Finch (another in Whitehaven), 3 Chipping and 8 Fox Sparrows.
On the count as a whole, there was an immature Golden Eagle, 6 Sedge Wren and 6 Marsh Wren, but the Franklin's Gull at the landfill was not seen.

Good Birding,
