On Saturday I participated in the Washington DC CBC and on Sunday the Catoctin CBC.
On Saturday at Oxon Hill Farm with John Bjerke, Jack Schults, and Helen Cavanagh our highlights were a Green-winged Teal, a Pied-billed Grebe, a Phoebe, two Catbirds, and four Pipits on the ground. In the afternoon I birded Anacostia Park where my best birds were a Snipe, a Laughing Gull, an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull (opposite the Washington Navy Yard), an Orange-crowned Warbler (lutescens), and a Savannah Sparrow.
On Sunday with Don Jewell I covered parts of the Monocacy River and Toms Creek area of Frederick and Carroll counties. We found large numbers (715) of Horned Larks (about 600 in one flock in Carroll County just west of Keysville Road and between Forest & Stream Club Road and Sixes Bridge Road). Very few of these were seen on the ground because of the rolling hills that obstructed the view when they went down, however, one rattling Lapland Longspur flew low overhead while we were walking on Forest & Stream Club Road. Other highlights were two male Harriers, three Killdeer, a Red-headed Woodpecker, two Phoebes, a Red-breasted Nuthatch, a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, 8 Savannah Sparrows, 8 Meadowlarks, 4 Common Grackles, and a Purple Finch.
