I had this Junco in my yard today and I tried to get a photo of it. I took a
crummy photo out of my den window with my Nikon CP 4500 attached to my scope.
I've had a couple folks tell me they think it looks encouraging but very hard
to tell from the photo. I put the unaltered (full sized; 803 KB) photo on the
web ...

The roads are pretty bad out here tonight and I wouldn't recommend anyone
drive
out here tomorrow but I'll try and keep folks posted (If I'm home). If I'm
not
home then I'd guess that the roads got better.

I suspect that an Oregon would have more obvious brown on the back. Someone
suggested that it could be the "cismontanus" subspecies of SC Junco (J. h.
cismontanus). This bird looked to me more like it was fading from black on
the
hood to a dark brown on the back rather than having some contrast like I'd
expect of an Oregon. The photo makes it look like there was more contrast than
I remember seeing when looking at it so I remain interested. It definitely
has
a more obvious concave black bib and more rufous sides than I've ever seen
on a
SC Junco before !
