While refilling the feeder this afternoon, I heard an unusual squawk,
sort of blue jay-ish, in the woods across the street. The bird called twice
more and then I saw a large hawk fly farther into the woods. Of course,
by the time I ran inside for the binoculars it was gone. I've listened
to my Peterson audio files, and it seems this may have been a
Red-shouldered Hawk, though on the audio files the call is repeated
several times in quick succession, which this bird did not do.
Is there any other big bird that gives that kind of single call?

The Red-breasted Nuthatch waited impatiently while I was trying
to ID the hawk. It is much bolder than the bigger nuthatches.
I am really happy it seems to be staying here for the winter.
I also had a pair of Purple Finches, and a flock of more than
two dozen Mourning Doves with a single male Brown-headed Cowbird
among them.
