Kevin Graff and I birded in Dorchester County today. We started at the marina of the Cambridge Yacht Club where the immature male Harlequin Duck was easily found with its attendant flock of about a dozen Buffleheads maneuvering among the boats and piers. While there looking at the other ducks in the river we saw what was probably a first-winter Glaucous Gull fly away. It headed downstream and toward the other side of the river. There were well over a thousand Surf Scoters in the river and we could see the large flock of Canvasbacks off Oakley Street. Two Long-tailed Ducks were also in the marina.
Our next stop was Blackwater NWR where the four White Pelicans were sitting with their bills tucked near some Tundra Swans. They were south of Pool 5B as we looked from the last turnout on the wildlife drive. At least a dozen Bald Eagles were in sight at once while we looked at the pelicans.
We then went to the Beulah Landfill where the best bird was a first-winter Iceland Gull, a rather large Herring Gull-sized bird. We also saw a fourth-winter Lesser Black-back among the thousands of mostly Herring Gulls. We also stopped at Choptank where these birds go to bathe but found only the basic three species there.
