I covered a few DC birding sites today. In the morning I walked most of
Anacostia Park, from the railroad tracks down to South Capitol. most of
the good birds were at the lower end, where I had Ruddy Ducks and the
Pied-billed Grebe, plus both kinglets in the bushes. Just south of the
Pennsylvania Avenue bridge, there was one goose that appeared smaller
and grayer than the surrounding Canada Geese. Unfortunately the range
was a bit too long for me to conclude whether this was actually a
Cackling Goose. I do have some photos, but they do not add much to the
story.
Anacostia Park Birds:
Pied-billed Grebe
Ruddy Duck
Red-shouldered Hawk
Red-tailed Hawk
Golden-crowned Kinglet
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
In the afternoon I visited Georgetown Reservoir and the canal. The few
ducks at the reservoir were far at the back, except for one Lesser Scaup
in the foreground; I made out one Canvasback among the distant crowd.
One adult Lesser Black-backed Gull was among the common gulls on the
dike. At the canal I was working a lot of the deer trails between the
canal and the river (between Fletcher's Boathouse and the Chain Bridge).
It was back there that I found the sparrows and the Common Yellowthroat.
The Chain Bridge ponds held Hooded and Common Mergansers.
Reservoir/Canal Birds:
Great Blue Heron (C&O)
Canvasback (GR)
Lesser Scaup (GR)
Hooded Merganser (C&O)

It was a great day to be out birding.
Good birding,
