Ruth and I took our annual MLK birding trip to Kent County. Rather than beat the bushes, we had some target birds we wanted to see.
--Shortly after leaving Galena on Route 213, we had great looks at both a mature and immature Bald Eagle together soaring over the road.
--Just South of Rock Hall, turning right on Allen's Lane and following it to the Bay, we found a large number of ducks. From our vantage point, as we panned the scope from left to right, we saw ducks. They were fairly far out and for my ARMD eyes difficult to identify but there seemed to be large numbers of Scaup and Golden-eye.
--At Eastern Neck NWR we had great looks at both Tundra and Mute Swans very close the road. However there was not a large number of swans nor of ducks for that matter. The Bufflehead was the most common. It is hard to complain though when a mature male Bufflehead moves into and fills the viewing area of your scope--beautiful bird.
--The Chesapeake Farms (formally Remington Farms) pond was about half covered with ice. There were quite a few Canada Geese. Pin-tails and Shovelers were the dominate ducks. Our target bird, the White-crowned Sparrow, was in the bushes that lined the road and we had great looks. The adult, male is a beautiful bird. It was worth the trip.
