A late-afternoon walk at Pennyfield Lock on the C&O Canal (Mile 20+) yielded
an Eastern Phoebe eating a winged insect, a male Belted Kingfisher, a
Ruby-crowned Kinglet, many Fish Crows calling overhead, and a group of about
25 Black Vultures heading for their roost across the river in Virginia. The
usual woodpeckers and dickybirds were also actively feeding and calling.
