Hi Folks,

A slightly belated report from early Sunday morning, 3/5/06, concerning the
birds found at the series of ponds that line the south side of the Patapsco
River along the northern edge of Anne Arundel Co. The Wood Ducks are in!
Elaine and I visited seven of those ponds and found:

Pond #14 (eastern-most of the three large ponds along Bellegrove Ave.,
viewed from vicinity of VFW club):

Pied-billed Grebe--2
Hooded Merganser--2

Pond #13 (viewed mostly from Malibu's restaurant/bar):

Pied-billed Grebe--1
GB Heron--1
Bald Eagle--1 adult
Great Black-backed Gull--2

Pond #12 (we parked at small state park gate near power-line stantions (sp?)
and walked the isthmus between ponds 13 & 12):

Canada Goose--14
Wood Duck--pair
Mallard--3
Green-winged Teal--1 male
Hooded Merganser--4 (3m 1f)
GB Heron--1
Cooper's Hawk--1
Ring-billed Gull--1
Great Black-backed Gull--2
Fish Crow

Pond #11 (on Nursery Rd. just west of B&A Blvd; parking on paved pull-off in
front of pond; the pond had little water in it, and all the ducks were
concentrated at the far end, and this was good because the teal did not
flush as usual):

Canada Goose--16
Gadwall--10 (4m 6f)
Green-winged Teal--28
Red-tailed Hawk

Pond #10 (on west edge of BW Parkway, accessed from Barkwood? Court off of
Nursery Rd.; turn north off of Nursery Rd., make a slight right, then
continue in same direction to back of business park):

Canada Goose--8
Wood Duck--11 (3m, 3f)
Hooded Merganser--8 (3m, 5f)
Ring-billed Gull--15
Herring Gull--2

Pond #9 (visible this time of year through trees at back of business park
accessed from Nursery Rd. just east of I-695):

Mallard--1 male
N. Shoveler--2 pairs
Bufflhead--1 male (first time seen here)

Pond #7 (at one of many pull-offs along River Rd.):

GB Heron--1
Red-shouldered Hawk--1

Pond #3 (accessed from pull-off along River Rd., then along path through
woods):

Gadwall--1 male
Mallard--pair
Hooded Merganser--5 (2m, 3f)
GB Heron

We did not have time to visit Pond #2 along the railroad tracks, but it
often has Gadwall and GW Teal. We did, however, visit the small pond at
BWI, where Broadmore Rd. ends at Andover Rd., then a short walk along the
BWI Trail. It had:

Ring-necked Duck--1 hen
Hooded Merg.--pair
