I agree with the comments made by Mark.  Further, as a graduate student working with birds, I can speak first hand of the very strict protocols outlined by universities for research done with live vertebrates.  Oversight of these protocols is typically done by a professional group known as IACUC (Instiutional Animal Care and Use Committee) who review each project and ensure they follow strict guidelines.  I did a quick search of Auburn University and found such an organization there, and assume the yellow-throated warbler work would fall under such rules.  Their web site can be found at the following:

  Finally, I just want to mention that WE ALL contribute to the death of millions of birds everytime we use our cell phones., throuth the collision of birds with communication towers.  Scientifically sound work on 20 birds will hopefully contribute to the conservation of this species, not hurt it.
