Hello,
Re Norm's and Tyler's comments on ABA:
I've been a member of ABA since the late 1980s and have generally liked
the articles in Birding & Winging It. I must say, however, that the ABA
seems to have drifted far from its roots as an organization for birders
by birders. I've been vaguely aware of power struggles or shifts at the
top of the organization at various times.
Recent issues of Birding have been based on a particular theme. If you
are interested in that theme, fine; if not, the issue is not relevant to
the reader. Issues devoted principally to birding in other countries
could be addressed in another publication.
Articles have become more technical or "advanced" in recent years. I
suppose that is good or bad depending on the interest and expertise of
the reader. Some are of interest to me, some are not. I am interested
in the articles on difficult ID issues. I also like "Tools of the
Trade." (usually) Many of the Photo Quiz photos in Birding recently are
way past me. I guess that demonstrates I'm far from being as expert.
The only ABA conference I have attended was the one in Panama last
September. I enjoyed that very much and added significantly to my life
list. I may attend the convention in Maine as a sponsor of a grandson
who wishes to attend the Young Birder Track.
It is interesting to see other birders comments. Maybe if enough
birders around the country give their views a change for the better in
ABA could be accomplished.
