Morning all,

I went birding on the C&O canal at the 72.8 mile marker across from
Shepherdstown, WV. I'd just crossed the bridge to the towpath when I saw
some ducks on the water. I observed them for about 15 minutes as they
slowly came closer...

I finally scurried back to my car for my field guide and from my
observations and notes, I identified them as Scaup. From their size, I'd
say Lesser Scaup.

I returned to the towpath but the scaup were no longer to be seen. I
continued birding upriver along the towpath and I relocated the scaup just
below the Rt 34 bridge.

The observations occurred from about 6:30 to 6:45, and again from 7:00 to
7:20. This was another life bird for me so I took my time to make sure I
ID'd it correctly. What a great way to start the day!
