My earliest recollections of conscious thought contain images of birds.  

I close my eyes, and I see an Ivory-Billed woodpecker... my pet canary (I
was 7)... Robins on the front lawn of my childhood home in  Philadelphia.

They are all alive, as far as I'm concerned.
