Spent the morning walking through the Ivy Swamp (what the locals call
Idlewilde WMA) just north of Federalsburg. Due to the low water levels it
was possible to acsess areas that are normally quite difficult to navigate
on foot. I didn't see alot of variety or any new migrants. A singing
Winter Wren was probably the highight of the morning. A pair of
White-breasted Nuthatches were moving in and out of a hole in a large oak.
I also observed many pairs of Carolina Chickadees exploring holes throughout
the swamp. Phoebes, Wood Ducks, and Pileated Woodpeckers were also quite
vocal. Unlike yesterday along the Potomac in Washington County where
Bloodroot, Hepatica, Cut-leaf Toothwort, Spring Beauties, Dutchman Breeches,
and Virginia Bluebells were in bloom, I saw no wildflowers blossoming or any
butterflies although it wasn't as sunny as yesterday. Also, I heard no
frogs -- strange.
