As an observer of Great Horned Owls and their nesting activity in the Baltimore County area, I have
learned to become very cautious when divulging any information. This was not the case when I
was shown my first GH owl nest in 1995. I'll never forget the day that I approached too close to
the nest in order to get a photograph. The adult GH owl flew off and immediately a group of
Crows started to harass the young. I quickly left the area and watched from a safe distance. For
several long, agonizing minutes the young were left exposed and I thought the crows would kill
them, all because of my stupidity!!! Fortunately the adult owl returned and the Crows withdrew.
Since then I have become more and more cautious regarding when and with whom to share nest
locations with. In addition, I no longer try to photograph nesting birds at all!
